Last Summer, I finally repotted one of my neglected plants. It was in a small pot for years because that’s just where it lived and somehow survived. I kept meaning to transfer it to a bigger pot, which would give it more room for its roots to grow and encourage larger overall growth.
When repotting, I noticed the roots were all tangled in dry, compacted soil. There was no space for extra growth, and I’m surprised it had made it this far.
My plant is finally thriving, not just surviving!
It’s already slightly bigger, and is growing outwards instead of just upwards.
Before any plant people panic, a pot that is too big is also not great for plants, but work with me here!

If you leave a plant in the same pot, it won’t grow beyond it, but a slightly bigger one will help it expand.
It made me think about how easily we do the same. We can so easily keep ourselves planted in one place, comfortable, living, getting by. It’s not until we put ourselves in a bigger pot or environment that we are able to expand.
Some of the ways people might keep themselves at the same level is by staying in one area to live, in one role because “it’s fine”, or postponing discomfort in a situation, like a relationship that doesn’t feel right.
Familiarity can be so comfortable.
I think most of us have moments where we keep ourselves grounded in one place, but we all have opportunities to grow and become bigger versions of ourselves.
Sometimes, you outgrow your current situation, and while it may be uncomfortable to begin with, repotting allows you to move beyond your current restrictions and into a healthier, more fulfilling environment.
Not everything needs redoing or fixing, but sometimes we do need to give ourselves space and choices.
